Download The Marine Habitat Classification for Britain and Ireland - Version 04.05

The following series of pdf documents and spreadsheets provide a downloadeable and "printable" version of the Marine Habitat Classification for Briatin and Ireland (version 04.05).

Introduction and background to the classification

This document provides background information to version 04.05 of the marine habitat classification for Britain and Ireland. It covers basic background, factors influencing marine biotopes, the development and revision of the classification, data analysis methods used, as well as guidelines for the use of the classification.

Translation tables for biotope codes (versions 97.06 / 04.05)

This set of spreadsheets is intended to aid the translation between the version 04.05 biotopes, and the biotopes in version 97.06 of the marine habitat classification (and vice versa), for users familiar with the 1997 classification system. Where possible, the tables show the closest equivalent biotopes (or other units) in both versions of the classification. Note that it is not always possible to "translate" directly between old and new biotopes.

The marine habitat classification does not cover saltmarsh communities, as these have already been classified by the National Vegetation Classification (NVC). Users wishing to record saltmarsh communities should use the NVC codes and descriptions. The NVC chapter on saltmarsh communities is available to download here. It is an extract from:
