3rd Meeting of the UK Biodiversity Indicators Forum
On Tuesday 6 July 2004, the third UK
Biodiversity Indicators Forum was held at the offices of the Joint
Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) in Peterborough.
Objectives of the day:
- Awareness raising, partnership building, development of common
understanding and co-ordination of UK biodiversity indicators
work.
- Clarification of the roles and responsibilities for UK CBD
implementation and measurement of progress towards the 2010
biodiversity targets (global and European)
At the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg
in 2002 it was agreed to:
'achieve by 2010 a significant reduction of the current
rate of biodiversity loss at the global, regional and national
level as a contribution to poverty alleviation and to the benefit
of all life on earth'
The European Commission Biodiversity Expert Group and a number
of meetings have worked to develop how these indicators might be
implemented at European and Pan-European scales.
This culminated in the discussions at the Malahide
Biodiversity and the EU - Sustaining Life, Sustaining
Livelihoods Conference.
The Biodiversity Indicators Forum meeting on 6 July 2004
provided an overview of these developments, considered reporting
requirements to the multi-lateral environmental agreements, and the
review of wildlife statistics being carried out by Defra. The
objective of the meeting was to clarify roles and responsibilities
for developing UK indicators to measure progress towards the 2010
target, and inputs that need to be made to European and Global
processes.
