Common Standards Monitoring Guidance for Coastal
(2004)
JNCC
Summary

Guidance on
monitoring coastal habitats is given under four broad headings:
Coastal vegetated shingle, Sand dune (including machair), Saltmarsh
and Maritime cliff and slope. The dune guidance includes specific
guidance for strandline, embryo and mobile dune; fixed dune
grassland; humid dune slacks; dunes with
Salix repens; and
machair grassland. The Maritime cliff and slope guidance addresses
both hard and soft cliffs. Guidance on other maritime habitats,
such as saline lagoons and mudflats, is included in the
Marine
section.
For each of the four main habitat types there is an
introduction, description of the habitat in the United Kingdom
(including regional variations), dynamics by which the feature may
change, followed by detail of the attributes used for assessing the
habitats. There are also sections on recommended visiting period,
skills required and methods of assessment. The generic tables are
included at the end of each document.
This guidance:
- identifies a set of generic attributes to assess status of the
feature, highlighting those attributes that should be used on all
sites, and those that are site-specific (discretionary) to be used
to reflect local distinctiveness;
- provides advice on setting targets
