JNCC's new Annual Report highlights the benefits of
partnerships
Things are not as dark as the cover of the Joint Nature
Conservation Committee's latest Annual Report might
suggest. The Government advisers have featured the shadow of
the brown long-eared bat on the jet black cover of their latest
report. This is one of 33 species of mammals whose changing
fortunes in Britain in recent years have been assessed by the
Tracking Mammals Partnership, a multi-organisation
initiative co-ordinated by JNCC. While populations of three
of our native species have declined, 10 have increased.
The Report contains spectacular images of some of the
wildlife and habitats that JNCC is working to conserve.
JNCC's portfolio of work covers everything from international
biodiversity conventions to overseas territories, tackling issues
involving trade in endangered species through to international
designations of UK habitat. Among the work reported is a
survey of non-native species in the UK's Overseas
Territories; such species are a potential problem for the native
plants and animals of small island countries like Bermuda, where
1,139 non-native species were recorded.
The report continues a standard that has helped the JNCC
Annual Report to win the coveted "Public Service Annual Report
of the Year" honour at the Charity and Public Service Publishing
Awards for the last two years running. Last year's Annual
Report also achieved an Award of Excellence at the 2005
Communicators in Business Awards.
"JNCC has been through some major changes in the last year"
notes JNCC Director of Resources and External Affairs, Marcus
Yeo. "The formulation of our long term strategy and the
creation of the new company will take us into a new era." Our
Annual Report continues to be aimed at a wide range of
individuals and organisations that have an interest in UK and
international nature conservation. We hope it both informs and
inspires them, while highlighting areas where we may be able to
work together for everyone's benefit."
