Going for green!
Peterborough-based nature conservation advisers rewarded
for reducing environmental impacts
5 April 2006
Government nature conservation
advisers JNCC have 'gone green' – with an official accreditation
from Peterborough Environment City Trust for reducing their
environmental impacts. The Business &
Environment Management Scheme (BEMS) award was presented
at JNCC's spring Committee dinner to recognise reductions in
energy, water and paper usage in the past three years, plus the
development of an environmental purchasing strategy.

Tracey Quince, JNCC Business
manager explained: "All staff have been involved with the scheme,
not just through environmental management but also with the more
informal 'greening' group. We're not a particularly large
organisation but it just shows that with support from PECT, you can
really make a difference to both the environment and your
budget. We've not only seen the benefit of a reduction in
costs, we're more efficient as staff are more
motivated."
Presenting the award to JNCC, Hugh
Cripps Chief Executive of Peterborough Environment City Trust said:
"JNCC has shown an extremely high degree of commitment to the
environment – not only through their work on nature conservation
but also by recognising the impact the day to day running of their
organisation has on the environment.
"The commitment to reducing their
ecological footprint is also clearly evident throughout the
organisation, from the very senior management through to the staff
delivering the service on the ground. JNCC are a shining
example of how all companies and organisations should operate, with
true regard to the world we live in."
The BEMS scheme provides assistance
and training to companies and organisations. It is supported by
environmental specialists from local authorities, Defra, the
Environment Agency and the British Standards Institution
(BSi).
