Seabird and marine mammal dispersion in the waters around the Falkland Islands 1998–1999 1999

Abstract

Between February 1998 and January 1999, JNCC systematically surveyed seabirds and marine mammals in the waters around the Falkland lslands using vessels of opportunity. This report summarises the results of this first year of survey.

For the first time, year-round at-sea dispersion patterns of these species have been recorded for this important sub-Antarctic region. Survey results have been used to map dispersion patterns of seabird and marine mammal species encountered, and the 12 month survey has greatly enhanced our knowledge of at-sea dispersion patterns of the internationally important seabird and cetacean communities around the Falkland Islands.
